![]() ![]() I would consult with a real soldier that flew in these or a mechanic. I'm not an expert so, I might be flat out wrong. Also, it might be because of complications with the V-22 sometimes crashing. Meanwhile Vtol's have their engines? Offset which can mean any number of things can happen like the heli flipping over or a violent violent turnover. You're right they can, but they only have to worry about 1 engine center of mass, I mean Chinook has two offset, but you get it. VTOL's on the other hand require a fuck ton more of maintenance because if for a split second your moving wing decides "hey, I don't wanna work because you didn't lube me or tighten my bolts, or any of the electrical systems were not serviced." You're wondering this can happen to any number of aircraft like blackhawk or seaknight, or chinook. Sure it's nice to have go about Mach 2 and having replacement parts or but making it complicated makes it expensive especially making it carrier-borne and extra space needed for wing replacement which isn't that viable if you want to save as much space when your supercarrier is supposed to be loaded with 70-90 aircraft. Moving parts are generally a scary thing, one of the reasons why the F-14 was phased out was because the the Variable Sweep Wings was expensive and required more maintenance. Overall, I just don't see a space for the Defiant to fit into. Performance-wise, the SB-1 would probably be a stronger candidate in Europe where range isn't as important as in the Pacific, but European allies have been clamoring about how they need to become less dependent on the US and that would seriously hurt the chances of them adopting another US platform after the F-35.Īllies in the Pacific that could afford it would most likely try to harmonize with the US for logistical purposes, but excluding that it would be interesting to see them compete the two since they are very urbanized and might value the smaller footprint and higher low-speed maneuverability of the SB-1. The unit price of the V-280 is going to drop due to the huge US army production run, which IMO is the biggest factor for countries that don't have the US defense budget. If I had to guess, I would say the Defiant is finished. The Blackhawk has a “cruise” velocity of about 120-140 knots, that isn’t safely possible with a human pendulum. Also, STABO hasn’t used in a hot minute due to the fact that guys are just dangling out as a target of opportunity. The Blackhawk is the Swiss Army knife of helicopters for the US military. Having medivac/casevac’d/extracted 100s if not 1000s of times there were few times it was to any sort of “improved” LZ. Having repelled, FAST roped, and hoisted and even landed in urban streets and roof tops….in combat….these have all been a last resort or quick insertion/extraction scenario. However, fastrope/STABO/hoist in an urban environment is not ideal as any craft is most vulnerable at TO, landing, and hover. The Valor being able to self deploy is crucial. There are many thing that SOCOM/JSOC use the Blackhawk for beyond transport from hard point to hard point.
